What does it mean to be a hero? Is there any justification for war? How do you decide what to take when you have 30 minutes to leave the house you’ve lived in your entire life? What is the mechanism by which a community is driven to march toward death? These are some of the questions that guided the creation of this performance.
The performance is a revisitation of Lev Tolstoy’s novel from the perspective of the current global context, in which the reconfiguration of spheres of influence demands a blood tribute on multiple continents.
In writing the script, Clemens Bechtel drew inspiration not only from the famous novel but also from interviews with World War II veterans, soldiers who participated in war zones after 1990, historians, war documentarians, and refugees from Ukraine.
Life, pulsing to the rhythm of Eros, and Death, with boots and backpack, marching convinced that there is no way back, share the stage.
