The book ‘Romanian theatre in the twentieth century: The free stage and new initiatives’, published this year by Frank & Timme in Berlin is addressed to German-speaking readers and offers a comprehensive picture of independent theatres in Romania, from their beginnings to the year 2022. The chapter ‘New Initiatives’ records the recent theatrical activities of the Theatre of Youth in Piatra Neamț, the Andrei Mureşan Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe, and the Constanţa State Theatre. New state theatres are also highlighted, as are the interdisciplinary programmes in Romanian universities. There is also detailed information about the theatre of the Roma minority. In addition to the chapters written by the author, the book includes a preface by the Austrian critic Michaela Preiner, texts by Oana Cristea Grigorescu, Oltița Cîntec, and Daniela Șilindean, and an interview with Cristina Modreanu.

Irina Wolf is an independent journalist who lives and works in Vienna. She is editor of the Austrian online platform Aurora-Magazin, and a contributor to the Italian magazine Hystrio.
