This cultural regeneration project, co-funded by the ‘Creative Europe’ Programme, 2021–2027, has as its aim the creation of an international network linking artists, theatre professionals, students, university teachers, and experts in various fields. Unlock the city! proposes a working method that brings together technical–scientific research, oriented towards design, and performative practice, to generate a sustainable urban development in the post-pandemic period. Operating in places and zones that have had a key role for citizens through the pandemic, the project explores the concept of limit (economic, social, physical, etc.) on three levels: the building (the Object), the community (the Subject), and the relation between the urban zone and the Theatre (the Relation). The approach puts the accent on researching the relation between urban space, public, and theatre in the post-pandemic period, through a series of workshops and thematic courses involving students from Belgium and the Czech Republic, and will lead to the creation of twelve theatrical productions (in Romania, Italy, Spain, and Belgium) by ten European artists. Those produced by the Theatre of Youth will be authored by Irina Moscu, Bogdan Zamfir, and Daniel Chirilă.

The project is running in six countries (Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy, Norway, Romania, and Spain) and involves a partnership between four theatre institutions with broad international openness and two academies specialized in landscape studies.

What are the geographical and human limits that currently define our urban life? Following the pandemic, what relation has formed between ‘closed’ and ‘open’? Between the slow rhythm of nature and the variability of the urban landscape?

These questions are the starting point for the artistic, social, and scientific answers of the partners in the project UNLOCK THE CITY!
