Followed over a period of twenty-five years, the path through life of a girl from the Țiglina IV district of Galați highlights some stages and themes of Romania’s transition period from communism: beating carpets, factories closing, privatizations, the first foreign products, some masked disappointments, emancipations, renovations, and returns—all equal, treasured like totems. Written with much humour and with a charming attention to the quirks and the spirit of the years that it visits, the production draws its energy not from dramatic conflict but from the tenderness aroused in us by any backward glance. Ingenious in the presence of several stage avatars for the same character, and courageous in the biographical line that anchors the whole in truth, the staging finds one of the liveliest and most reconciled theatrical formulations about the Romanian middle-class family, in its permanent balancing act between the old and the new.
