The Return of Karl May tackles with lucidity and humour the attitude that the West has towards Eastern Europe: an assumed cultural, political, and intellectual superiority, with its origins in colonialism and racism. Canonical works of Western culture, including the novels of the famous Karl May, perpetuate this mentality, in which the West is a fount of wisdom, science, culture, and civilization, populated by skilled and intelligent Catholics who keep their word, while the exotic Eastern Europe is despotic, full of ignorant people with no dignity, thieves, Muslims, whose one goal is robbery. The production explores contemporary Europe, with its assumed cultural and civilizing values in competition with strong racist feelings.
A performance in Albanian, with subtitles in Romanian and English.
