Starting from the feminine types in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this production offers a modern take on the relations between mother, teenage daughter, and an authoritarian and mostly absent father. Major themes are the demand for young people’s independence from their parents, the perception of woman in society, the conflict between financially differentiated social classes, and the opposition between duty to the family and individual aspirations. To these is added a vision of theatre as a platform and meeting place for those who desire change. For Julieta, the teenage girl aspiring to an acting career, theatre is identified as a space of freedom, the optimal medium in which she can manifest her identity.
